Leaves are Falling and Autumn is Calling

randy-floral-image4-1.jpg

The sizzling heat of a long Kansas City summer is about to give way to the crisp, cool days of autumn. For many, fall can be a busy time. The kids head back to school and a full schedule of after-school activities. Parents start planning costumes and parties for little trick-or-treaters and arranging Thanksgiving plans.

Perhaps the best way to make the cozy home atmosphere complete is to dress up each room in the colors and décor of the season. Whether you want to add a few small touches here and there or completely transform your home's look, we at Randy Neal Floral Design have a wide range of options and fresh ideas for fall decorating this season.

Cool New Autumn Décor Ideas to Bring Warmth to Your Home

There are a few new twists in the mix for autumn decorating this year. Instead of pairing only warm colors together or with black, one new way to usher in autumn is to incorporate warm colors with complementary cool grays or shades of blue, such as navy or marina. The fresh look is easy to achieve, from our selection of candles, including custom colors we can order, to flowers to pillows for your couches or bed.

Let our designers create beautiful autumn floral arrangements, adding unique textures. One popular fall look is the use of artichokes in fresh arrangements. Additionally, we have just received a beautiful collection of ceramic artichokes, which bring a sense of natural style to your home’s décor.

Another unique way to welcome the cooler season is to add hints of metal, and the hottest trend is using warm, shiny bronze, brass, and gold. Our gold African animal accents, candle sconces, and mirrors are the perfect addition to existing pieces or shelving décor.

The latest trend in fall candle scents is to move away from the traditional pumpkin, cinnamon, or apple and choose candles that imitate natural scents such as smoke, wood, or leather. Try out the woodsy, earthy scent of "Great Smoky" from our line of Alixx candles or the "Embers" scent from Aquiesse candles, which combines scents of Indian saffron, sweet cardamom, spicy tobacco, English leather, and musk. You can pick up Alixx or Aquiesse candles at Randy Neal Floral today.

Why not increase your happiness and bring a touch of nature into your home each month? Your Overland Park Florist, Randy Neal Floral Design, is your one stop shop for monthly flowers that will make your home bloom year round.

Overland Park Flowers of the Month

Did you know that there are different flowers associated with each month? Making monthly bouquets out of these symbolic flowers is an easy way to surround your self with the beauty and feelings of every season.

Winter Floral Arrangements Bloom with Love, Hope, and Loyalty

January’s flowers are the carnation and the snowdrop. Nothing adds a touch of brightness to winter like a bright carnation. Red carnations mean, “I love you.”

Snowdrops not only symbolize the frost sparkling outside your window, they also mean hope. In the short winter days, a snowdrop of spring is encouragement we all need to get through the cold.

Valentine’s Day flower arrangements are filled with red roses, but roses aren’t February’s flower! The shy violet with its purple petals is the February birth month flower. Symbolizing loyalty, the violet reminds us to be true to each other.

Spring Flowers Bring Affection, Bliss, and Happiness

Daffodil and jonquil blooms are like bouquets of spring sunshine right in your home. Both flowers symbolize affection and are early bloomers during the first month of spring.

April showers bring daises and sweet peas. While daisies sprout with cheer, their meaning is about loyalty, innocence, and love. The sweet pea signifies blissful pleasure. Think, “spring spa” and add a little sweet pea relaxation to your décor.

May birth month flowers are the lily of the valley and the hawthorn plant. Both flowers mean happiness. In fact, the hawthorn symbolizes supreme happiness. If you feel like your happy needs a boost, consider hawthorn flowers!

Summer Florals Shine With Passion and Pleasure

Summer wedding bouquets aren’t complete without roses, and conveniently, roses are a June flower. Just like June’s other monthly flower, the honeysuckle, both blooms speak of deep bonds and are fabulously fragrant.

July’s birth month flowers are known for dazzle just like the month they represent. Larkspur and the water lily also symbolize love, but with a burst of the majestic.

August flowers encourage you to soak up the sun with their ruffled petals. Bright gladiolus and poppies promote pleasure and the heat of summer fun.

Autumn Bouquets: Unity, Contentment and Longevity

As September days shorten, asters and morning glories continue to bloom. These fall wedding flowers indicate that powerful love always unites us.

Vibrant marigolds and cosmos represent October’s flowers. As the fall days turn cozy, so does the flower symbolism. Marigolds mean contentment in love while cosmos represent serenity.

Chrysanthemums are November’s flower. They promote purity, longevity and encourage us to always be true of heart.

And Don’t Forget December Flowers!

The pale white narcissus and the green/red holly couldn’t look more different. Yet, December’s flowers both symbolize hope—the perfect feeling for the holiday season.

Your Overland Park Florist grows romance petal by petal just for your Valentine’s Day sweetheart. Our romantic floral designs and Valentine bouquets will help you express your feelings and add extra romance to this special day.

Love is in the air in February, but have you ever wondered why? Here are some facts about Valentine’s Day and the romantic gifts we all desire.

The History of Valentine’s Day

Although specific days in February had long been celebrated by Romans and Catholics as a sacred time, February 14th wasn’t considered a romantic holiday until the 14th century when the tradition of courtly love took England by storm. In the 18th century, Valentine’s Day evolved into an official time to give flowers to the one you love.

Why Do We Give Roses for Valentine’s Day?

Roses are a truly a timeless gift. According to fossil evidence, roses are 35 million years old! There are over 150 species of roses in the Northern hemisphere.

But why are roses considered romantic? Greeks and Romans associated roses with their goddesses of love, Aphrodite and Venus. As a tribute to their goddess and their lovers, the Romans also liked to cover their beds with fragrant rose petals.

William Shakespeare and other poets also learned from the ancients and used roses as a symbol to convey passion, beauty, and romance in their writing. The popular arts and literature helped spread the idea that one of the most romantic gifts a lover can give is a red, red rose.

I Heart You! Possible Origins of the Heart Shape

These days love is often expressed in a text by a simple, cute emoji heart, but how did the image we know as a “heart” become the worldwide symbol for love? There are many theories about this, but two relate to plants.

Some historians believe that the heart originally came from the shape of ivy leaves. Ivy has long symbolized fidelity. Others believe the heart shape comes from an herb. Silphium is a type of fennel. The Greeks and the Romans, in matters of love, used this herb and its seedpod looks remarkably like the modern heart.

Chocolate: The Food of Love

And speaking of aphrodisiacs, chocolate is of course another popular Valentine’s Day gift. Chocolate’s history goes back to King Montezuma and the Aztecs, who called chocolate the food of the gods, but we have Richard Cadbury to thank for officially making it a romantic gift. In 1861, Cadbury was the first to sell heart-shaped boxes of chocolates on Valentine’s Day.

We Grow Love!

No matter how you decide to be romantic on Valentine’s Day your favorite Overland Park Florist, Randy Neal Floral Design, has the right valentine for your Valentine!

Get to Know Your Overland Park Florist: Bailey, Floral Designer

Bailey loves the fun plus work atmosphere at Randy Neal Floral Design.

We're always laughing and joking, even when things are crazy busy. I enjoy the positivity here.”

This talented floral designer took time from the busy Overland Park florist shop to answer questions about color palettes, bringing customers’ ideas to life, and how wreaths aren’t just for winter.

What’s your journey?

How did you become a Floral Designer in Overland Park?

I studied art, journalism, and design in college in Minneapolis, but after getting my degree I still wasn't sure where to head, career-wise. I spent some time as a festival coordinator with a nonprofit theater while I started learning floral design at a small shop in Minneapolis. I traded my marketing skills for floral training while working a few other part-time jobs.

Designing—What do you love about it?

My favorite piece of the design process is choosing the colors and textures that will fit with the idea or style I'm trying to convey. Colors have such impact on our moods and how we perceive things, so it's fun to try new combinations.

How did you come up with this bouquet?

When I start a bouquet, I try to think of my color palette first, and then work from there. I love to work with the more muted colors, so I chose the peachy zinnias and the indigo hydrangea first. I like the elegance and contrast of the light yellow stock with the darker hydrangea, and the fuchsia roses gave the whole thing a pop of bright so it isn’t too somber.

Got some seasonal floral ideas you can share?

I think that there are tons of fun ways to decorate for the specific holidays, Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc., but it’s also fun to incorporate seasonal items that are less holiday-specific. Garlands and wreaths aren’t just for winter holidays! Make a cool wreath with bright red/orange leaves and berry branches, or a swag of magnolia and bittersweet for the mantel to bring in those warm seasonal colors.

Every florist has a favorite flower, what’s yours?

Sunflowers! They remind me of my grandparents and have a strong connection to family for me. I love the geometry of their centers; farmers plant them to replenish nutrients in the soil for crops. I just think they're very special flowers.

How do you make the customer part of your creative process?

Most people who order flowers come into the conversation having at least an idea of what they want, but many times people don't realize how many options there are out there. Designer's choice arrangements are always great because there's so much freedom there, but it's also fun to work together with a customer's more specific ideas to make their vision come to life.

What’s your best piece of floral advice?

I think people often have a picture in their mind that certain flowers mean certain things: red roses=love, yellow roses=friendship...While these meanings and their histories are fascinating, I think it's easy to get too hung up on them. Don’t be afraid to be original!
